Tobacco pen device IQOS in San José: the compare shortlist
Tobacco in San José: 16 units tested over 7 weeks, pen device formats, priced per 10 ml for Costa Rica.
Coil life, liquid cost and the tobacco habit
Most people searching IQOS in Costa Rica are not after a spec sheet. They want to know what it costs, how long it lasts and which shop will still service it in three months.
There is no single best way to buy IQOS in Costa Rica. There is only the batch that arrived, the coil that came with it, and whether the shop tracks the production run.
The short version: tobacco in San José works if the pen device, the coil and the strength are chosen as one system. Everything below is what we measured while doing exactly that.
What a tobacco pen device really costs in San José
Tobacco prices move with import duty more than with brand. In San José that means the entry option and the premium option can close to within ₡1.92 per 10 ml.
How we tested tobacco in a pen device
- Pick the pen device that fits the device already on your desk, not the one on the headline page.
- Settle the draw first: mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung, because it decides the coil and the liquid.
- Order before 14:00 so the parcel leaves the same day and lands inside 4–9 business days.
- Clear PG/VG ratio on the label, which predicts throat hit more accurately than strength.
- Spare parts availability for pen device in Costa Rica, since tanks and pods go first.
- The landed price per 10 ml after 4–9 business days, which is the only number worth comparing.
- The listed nicotine ceiling, which is the local legal limit in Costa Rica, not a suggestion.
Where tobacco goes wrong
- Mixing tobacco with a coil rated for a different wattage, which dulls the flavour and drains liquid faster.
- Treating the advertised ₡45 entry kit as the real cost when refills run ₡1.92 per 10 ml.
- Matching strength to the device instead of the draw, which is why tobacco tastes flat after two days.
The rules that apply here
Packaging for tobacco in Costa Rica must be child-resistant, and the batch code has to be readable without cutting the shrink wrap.
Retail sales in Costa Rica sit under the same nicotine the label declares, which is the local legal limit. Anything above it is not sold through this channel.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a pen device cost per 10 ml?
On the last run in San José: about ₡1.92 per 10 ml liquid plus ₡45 for the entry kit, before any bulk discount.
Do you ship tracked orders to Costa Rica?
Yes, tracked to 4–9 business days, with the same-day cut-off at 14:00. Bulk orders get an import note attached before dispatch.
Why does tobacco taste burnt?
Almost always the coil, not the liquid. On the pen device units we ran, a coil past 4 days turned the tobacco blend itself harsh.
