Salted box mod IQOS in San José: the review shortlist
Salted in San José: 6 units tested over 2 weeks, box mod formats, priced per 10 ml for Costa Rica.
Ordering IQOS to San José: the practical version
Most people searching IQOS in Costa Rica are not after a spec sheet. They want to know what it costs, how long it lasts and which shop will still service it in three months.
Salted prices move with import duty more than with brand. In San José that means the entry option and the premium option can close to within ₡1.91 per 10 ml.
The short version: salted in San José works if the box mod, the coil and the strength are chosen as one system. Everything below is what we measured while doing exactly that.
What a salted box mod really costs in San José
If you are looking at salted in Costa Rica, the first question is not strength. It is whether the box mod you are quoting actually fits the device on your desk.
How we tested salted in a box mod
- Order before 14:00 so the parcel leaves the same day and lands inside 4–9 business days.
- Settle the draw first: mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung, because it decides the coil and the liquid.
- Choose strength against the ceiling in Costa Rica, which is the local legal limit for retail here.
- Coil type inside the box mod, because mesh and wire age at different rates.
- The landed price per 10 ml after 4–9 business days, which is the only number worth comparing.
- Stock depth: 6 lines held, so the shortlist does not turn into a special order.
- Batch code and production date, so a salted bottle turned in 2 weeks ago is not sold as new.
Where salted goes wrong
- Buying the cheapest box mod available and repeating it because the first coil burnt.
- Mixing salted with a coil rated for a different wattage, which dulls the flavour and drains liquid faster.
- Treating the advertised ₡45 entry kit as the real cost when refills run ₡1.91 per 10 ml.
The rules that apply here
Retail sales in Costa Rica sit under the same nicotine the label declares, which is the local legal limit. Anything above it is not sold through this channel.
Costa Rica regulates nicotine imports under its health authority. Shipping of nicotine to Costa Rica runs through tracked freight only, which is why the quoted window is stated per order.

Frequently asked questions
What nicotine strength should salted start at?
Start at whatever Costa Rica allows on the label. If you already smoke, drop one step; if not, half of it for a box mod.
Why does salted taste burnt?
Almost always the coil, not the liquid. On the box mod units we ran, a coil past 6 days turned the salted blend itself harsh.
How much does a box mod cost per 10 ml?
On the last run in San José: about ₡1.91 per 10 ml liquid plus ₡45 for the entry kit, before any bulk discount.
