What a plain pen device really costs in San José
Plain in San José reaches the shelf in pen device formats, and the starter ones are rarely the ones that stay in stock. Availability, not taste, is what breaks an order.
How we tested plain in a pen device
- Settle the draw first: mouth-to-lung or direct-to-lung, because it decides the coil and the liquid.
- Choose strength against the ceiling in Costa Rica, which is the local legal limit for retail here.
- Pick the pen device that fits the device already on your desk, not the one on the headline page.
- Spare parts availability for pen device in Costa Rica, since tanks and pods go first.
- Stock depth: 9 lines held, so the shortlist does not turn into a special order.
- Child-resistant cap and tamper band on every plain bottle shipped into Costa Rica.
- Batch code and production date, so a plain bottle turned in 6 weeks ago is not sold as new.
Where plain goes wrong
- Chasing a discount on a pen device that then needs an adapter nobody in Costa Rica stocks.
- Mixing plain with a coil rated for a different wattage, which dulls the flavour and drains liquid faster.
- Buying the cheapest pen device available and repeating it because the first coil burnt.

Frequently asked questions
Why does plain taste burnt?
Almost always the coil, not the liquid. On the pen device units we ran, a coil past 4 days turned the plain blend itself harsh.
How much does a pen device cost per 10 ml?
On the last run in San José: about ₡2.21 per 10 ml liquid plus ₡47 for the entry kit, before any bulk discount.
How long does plain in a pen device last?
In San José we measured 6 to 9 days per unit depending on the coil. The bottle outlasts the coil, so the coil is what you replace.
